I never meant to stay.

Phnom Penh was supposed to be a two-day stop — a brief exhale between the grueling years of residency and whatever came next. I had just finished my training, earned my wings as an Emergency Medicine physician, and told myself I deserved a vacation. Cambodia was simply a pin on a map, a place I'd always been curious about. I packed light. I had a return ticket.

But some places have a way of holding you.

Something in the air of Phnom Penh — the warm haze of the Mekong, the chaos of the tuk-tuks, the smell of lemongrass drifting from street carts — wouldn't let me go. Eventually, I found myself asking my local driver a question that surprised even me.

"Is there anywhere in this city where people can get free medical care?"

He nodded slowly, “I can take you where I took my father”, and we drove.

When I walked through the clinic doors, a staff member looked me over carefully and said, with complete seriousness, "We don't treat Americans here."

I laughed. I couldn't help it. I explained that I wasn't there as a patient — I was an ER physician, and I wanted to work. To help. For free.

The look on his face shifted. And just like that, my vacation was over.

For the next six years, I returned to Phnom Penh for two months every year — until the birth of my children gently pulled me home for a while. What began as a detour became a devotion. The work there cracked something open in me and planted the seed of a career in global health that would take me to refugee camps in Mexico, to hospitals in Iraq, to India, and to so many places in between where medicine was needed most.

But it always comes back to Cambodia.

I remember the way mornings began — a soft, formal "Chum reap suor" from a colleague, or the brighter, easier "Susadei!" called across a courtyard. And always, always, the phrase that seemed to answer every question about how someone was getting along: Sok Sabay. Peaceful and well. It was an aspiration and a greeting all at once, and I heard it every single day.

And I remember the monks.

They moved through the city in the early light like slow flames — their robes the most vivid, unapologetic orange I had ever seen. There was something about that color. It wasn't decorative. It carried weight. It spoke of sacrifice, of presence, of choosing to show up for something larger than yourself.
